Health Concerns With Increases in Cyclospora Illness

he Ohio Department of Health is advising that you take extra precautions handling fresh fruits and vegetables.

There’s an increase in the number of illnesses tied to the parasite Cyclospora.

As of July 2 and the latest information, there were 177 cases of Cyclospora in Ohio, with 28 Ohioans hospitalized.

There were no reported cases in Trumbull County though, with two in Mahoning.

Major diarrhea is said to be a key symptom.

Canton City Public Health says you should wash fruits and vegetables well under running water and refrigerate cut fruits and veggies.

Unclean water can also be a source.

Know the symptoms:
• Watery diarrhea
• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Stomach cramps or bloating
• Low fever

If you have these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

A stool test may be needed to diagnose Cyclospora, and treatment is available.

Help Protect Yourself:
Wash fruits and vegetables well under running water.
Refrigerate cut fruits and vegetables right away.
Drink safe, clean water.

Cyclospora is usually spread through contaminated food or water, often fresh produce.

It is not known to spread from person to person.
