HEAT WAVE: Top Doc Offers Health Advice

State Health Director Dr Bruce Vanderhoff has some hot weather tips.

He says it’s important during the heat wave to note that infants, young children, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions are at a higher risk for a heat-related illness.

Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are important.

When outside during the day, Dr Vanderhoff says wear a wide-brimmed hat and use sunscreen of at least 30 SPF if you’re out in the sun for a time.

He says the FDA and Academy of Pediatrics recommend NOT using sunscreen on children six months or under.

Coaches of kids in team sports should watch closely for any sign of heat stress.

The health department has additional information on risks for the elderly.
