This is Fire Prevention Week.
The American Red Cross responds to most house fires, but they also work on the prevention side, as well as advising what to do when you hear that smoke alarm beeping.
You should have a plan that even involves younger children in the household.
Regional Communications Manager for the American Red Cross of Northern Ohio Ryan Lang says even though many newer homes and newer installations involve an electrical connection, each detector has a battery backup, and that battery needs to be checked routinely.
Also, when you’re checking or changing out the battery, check the manufacturer’s date on the device.
It should be under ten years old.
