Governor Mike DeWine wants the state legislature to abolish the death penalty.
In an explanation from the media room of the State Office Tower on Tuesday, DeWine says the 40-plus years of reinstituted capital punishment has not been a deterrent for homicides as had been intended.
Instead, there’s little certainty a death case will be followed through.
And he says swiftness desired in such cases is not there.
State Republican leaders, though, say they will oppose any effort to eliminate the death penalty.
